TENTH GROUP SUCCESS FOR EVER-POPULAR MILLENARY
The prize for yesterday’s Gr.2 Lonsdale Stakes looked to be
safely in the clutches of the favourite Distinction (Danehill) as
he took the lead just over a furlong out, but the popular
eight-year-old Millenary swooped past on his outside in the final
strides to claim the spoils. The 2000 St Leger remains Millenary’s
only top level success but he had previously won the Gr.3 Chester
Vase and Gr.3 Gordon Stakes, and has subsequently added the Gr.2
Princess of Wales’s Stakes at five and six, and the Gr.2 Yorkshire
Cup, Gr.2 Doncaster Cup and Gr.3 Jockey Club Cup at seven.
Millenary was homebred by Abergwaun Farms (also breeders of the
Gr.2 Great Voltigeur Stakes fourth Kong) and is a son of Juddmonte
Farms’ RAINBOW QUEST.
His trainer, John Dunlop, had also won York’s opener, a 12 furlong
handicap, with the four-year-old Camrose (Zafonic).
