HOIST THE FLAG!
Tradition dictates Henry Cecil's Warren Place standard be unfurled to herald each Group 1 success, but
the flag had not been hoisted in over six years. However, the ceremony is in vogue once more after Juddmonte Farms' aptly named 15-1 chance Passage Of Time (GB) (Dansili {GB}) stepped up from a Listed win and justified the €15,000 supplementary fee with an impressive 3/4-length defeat of Soldier
of Fortune (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in the G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud yesterday.
Not since Beat Hollow (GB) captured the G1 Grand Prix de Paris in 2000, also for Khalid Abdullah, had Cecil enjoyed the spotlight. The Newmarket handler has a winter of content before embarking on the Classic path towards the G1 Epsom Oaks or G1 Prix de Diane Hermes next year. "We've had a quiet time for the last few years and it's nice for the stable to be back on top," said Cecil. Improving off a debut fifth at Yarmouth July 18, Passage Of Time shed maiden status in a similar event at Newmarket's July course Aug. 12 before trouncing the opposition by more than five lengths in the Listed Montrose Fillies' S. at her local Rowley Mile track last time Oct. 28.
Stretching out to 10 furlongs for the first time here, she found the trip well within her scope, exhibiting a smart turn of foot to record a career best in taking fashion. Allowed to find a rhythm in sixth as Spirit One (Fr) (Anabaa Blue {GB}) set solid fractions, Passage Of Time was not unduly hurried as the heat
was turned up in early stretch. Last off the bridle, she squeezed between Empire Day and Red Rock Canyon (Ire) (Rock Of Gibraltar {Ire}) to challenge approaching the final furlong and unleashed a power-packed finish to sweep by Soldier Of Fortune inside the last 150 meters for the score.
"I kicked for home quite early at Newmarket last time, but I was delighted to see her quicken from off the pace like that," enthused winning rider Richard Hughes. "I am convinced she will be a very nice filly for the Oaks next year."
The success saw owner Khalid Abdullah extend his lead in the French owners' table, and trainer Henry Cecil was more than happy to be of assistance in that regard. "I'm very pleased for the Prince [Khalid], as the win will certainly help him become leading owner [in France], which he fully deserves to be," Cecil said. As for the future of the winner, he added, "Passage Of Time should make a lovely three-year-old, but whether she goes for the Diane or Oaks time will tell. In fact, she will tell us."
