HARD TO BEAT FOR RARITY VALUE
Juddmonte Farms made a rare October Sale Part Two swoop (at
75,000gns) for this son of their promising young sire
BEAT HOLLOW from the
family of Zafonic and Reams of Verse.
It’s not often that Prince Khalid Abdullah buys at the latter
stages of the October Sale Part Two – his racing
manager, Teddy Grimthorpe, could not remember the last time. That
changed yesterday when Grimthorpe
paid 75,000gns for a colt by BEAT
HOLLOW (Lot 1616) who stands at his boss’s Banstead
Manor Stud in
Newmarket. The price topped the day’s two sessions and was yet
another auction high for David Powell’s
Catridge Farm Stud.
Grimthorpe, who relegated Andrew Balding to the underbidder’s
role, admitted he was happy to buy a colt
by a Juddmonte Farm stallion, but said that was not the sole reason
for being at Park Paddocks.
“We don’t support him [BEAT
HOLLOW] for the sake of it – this was a lovely
stamp of horse and we know both
sides of the family,” said Grimthorpe.
Produced by the Catrail mare Londonnet, the colt’s page included
such Juddmonte luminaries as Zafonic
and Zamindar, stallion sons of Zaizafon who was produced by the
yearling’s fourth dam Mofida. This
branch of the family has lost some potency in the last two
generations, but the yearling looked as if he could
resurrect its fortunes.
BEAT HOLLOW has
made an excellent start at stud, producing Gr.3 winner Charlotte O
Fraise and Listed
victor Streets Ahead from his small first crop. “We’ve been
delighted with him,” said Grimthorpe. “He’s done well from not many
mares."
“This yearling will go back to Ireland to be broken in and then
the Prince will decide where he will be trained.”
