DANSILI LINK HELPS TOP LOT AT NEW SESSION

A quiet day in the ring eased buyers and vendors into action as Tattersalls’ December Foal Sale began in Newmarket yesterday. A 58,000gns son of Dansili –sire of this year’s Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe winner Rail Link – gave a hint of the market’s strength, but the opening session at this event is not designed to be a source of Derby winners. Better-bred weanlings will come to the market as the week progresses, particularly during Friday’s penultimate session.

The average price achieved by the 124 foals who found new homes yesterday was 8,685gns, a lowly figure, but not bad when set against the fees that most of the stallions commanded. Turnover reached 1,077,000gns, with a median of 5,000gns, but this was a new session created by extending the Foal Sale to five days, so no comparisons could be made with previous years.

Noted pinhooker Ciaran (Flash) Conroy of Ireland’s Glenview Stud, working in conjunction with bloodstock agent John O’Byrne, bought the day’s session topper (Lot 491). Part of a large consignment from Paul and Sara Thorman’s Trickledown Stud in Hampshire, the March-foaled colt was pursued by Tony O’Callaghan and Amanda Skiffington before O’Byrne’s 58,000gns bid settled the issue.

Conroy said of the foal, “He’s by a very good stallion and was a nice horse and great mover. I’ve bought just one horse today and he was the one. He’ll probably come back here next year to the October Sale, Part Two.” Reflecting on the recent Goffs’ foal sale, Conroy said, “I bought seven there, but it was stronger than ever. It was a good trade there and it will be like that here later in the week. It is hard to buy in this market, but the yearling trade was good and you have to take the rough with the smooth.”
