ANTHONY PENFOLD TALKS ABOUT STRATEGIC PRINCE
Colt with ‘tremendous speed’ who should stay a mile and a
half
Taken from the Racing Post
Strategic Prince, b.c DANSILI–
Ausherra (Diesis)
By Anthony Penfold – on behalf of the Ausherra Partnership and
Bugley stud where Ausherra is boarded.
Why did you choose the sire?
It was a combination of things. A couple of her produce had shown
temperament, they were tricky at home and some had to be gelded.
DANSILI, like Danehill, had a
wonderful temperament. Also, she had bred horses like Yorkshire and
Riyadh, who were effective over two miles-plus, so we thought the
miling speed of DANSILI would suit.
She also needed a bit of substance.
Did you use any sort of pedigree analysis tool in planning the
mating?
Ausherra had already bred a colt by Danehill called Ashley, who had
won a couple of races as a two year old. He was quite small and
lacked scope but it was a cross that seemed to work. We also kept
in mind the success of Danzig over Sharpen Up, illustrated recently
by Dylan Thomas.
What was Strategic Prince like as a foal?
He was a late foal but he didn’t look like one and was very
straight forward. He was very strong, correct, and not over big.
But he didn’t stand out and you wouldn’t pick him out in the field.
When prepping him, he had a mind of his own but he’s a kind
horse.
What do you expect in the Guineas?
On pedigree, he should stay a mile and a half and it looks as if
Paul Cole is taking the same pattern as with Generous, who used the
Guineas as a stepping stone to the Derby. But the horse has shown a
tremendous amount of speed and should run very well. Teofilo looks
as if he is very special, but you shouldn’t be frightened of one
horse.
